AUGUST 21-27, 1967
_______________
You betcha! Yes, WKNR was serious about their title for this Keener contest the station promoted back in August 1967.
Here’s a snapshot of WKNR music director Paul Cannon holding the little mascot cub in front of the WKNR studios on Michigan Avenue.
Now what school’s name was deemed the winner, that we do not know. (We’ll try to reach out to Paul Cannon for the rest of the story). But here’s picture proof we do have which shows THAT one Keener mascot contest was the real deal! 🙂

— STORY UPDATE! —
PAUL CANNON
We reached out to Paul Cannon yesterday afternoon (Thurs., Aug 26) and, according to what he shared more into the story, after the name of the winning school was announced, WKNR immediately acquired the lion cub at a pre-selected exotic pet store outlet in the metro Detroit area for its delivery (yes, acquiring such pets in those days for private ownership was not illegal!).
The little cubby, still in the crate, was “not at all too friendly, growling and hissing at us” during its transport to the winning school. The following day, several of the school’s personnel and students returned to the station. With the cub tagging along on a leash. As overly cantankerous the cub was, Paul Cannon, exclaimed, “how did you manage to get a leash around its neck?” Someone replied, “With hockey mitts!” 🙂
Oh, the winning school’s name? It was a Catholic school, according to Paul, located either on 6 Mile or 7 Mile at the time, back in August of 1967. Any recollection as to the school’s precise name is yet to be determined.
A Kodak moment, indeed. Great story. Thank you, Paul Cannon, for sharing the memory!

“Scott Regen was a phenomenon, um, that just happened, and I just went along for the ride.”
_______________
Right after having signed on WSAI’s Dick (formerly Paul in Cincinnati) Purtan in May 1965, WKNR, the number one Detroit radio station, created much fanfare and media publicity in promoting the arrival of Scott Regen to Detroit from Kansas City’s WHB.
Days before Scott Regen’s arrival to the station, WKNR gave its listeners daily “travel updates” on Keener 13, as Scott Regen loomed closer and closer to his scheduled arrival to the Dearborn studios, scheduled for the evening of Thursday, May 20, 1965.
Today, in honoring Scottie on his 80th birthday, Motor City Radio Flashbacks presents a collage of promos and memories recorded for the famed ’60s WKNR Keener legend.
These WKNR Scott Regen promos were recorded in 1965, 1966 and 1967. You will hear nearly 40 minute of Keener moments Scottie Regen shared in studio (and out) with many of the greatest ’60s pop stars, artists and groups who appeared on the Scott Regen Show, heard nightly 7-10 p.m. on WKNR.
During these noted ‘Keener’ years, Scott Regen became the No. 1 night-time radio disk jockey in Detroit. Just the same, it was during those years Scottie accomplished a phenomenal 25-29 ratings share of the Detroit radio audience — tuning in to his nightly show on Keener 13.

Happy Birthday, Scottie! And thank you for all the WKNR memories 🙂

WKNR ‘PAMS’ Jingles HEARD on MOTOR CITY RADIO FLASHBACKS
WKNR-AM | “CLYDE” | 1970-1971
PAMS PRODUCTIONS, DALLAS, TX
_______________
According to renown master jinglecologist Ken R., by 1970, WKNR had returned to a male-voiced custom package from PAMS which originally was titled “Sig Alert.” Accordingly, the package had been dubiously named after a traffic reporter in Los Angeles. The title of the package was later changed to “Clyde.” PAMS later told Ken R. the name was given because they didn’t come up a specific title for the (WKNR) package at the time. Adding as well, according to the keener.com webpage (see: Jingles) . . . . “Jonathan Wolfert, who went on to found JAM Creative Productions, made up some words to justify the title: “contemporary logos you don’t expect.” But listeners didn’t know that and PAMS never made it public.”
